Well, all three babies were born in the same room and all three had jaundice issues. It is normal but there is a curve they should follow and my babies do not follow the curve. Our girl was the best situation and it was because the pediatric nurse practitioner that was seeing us in the hospital was on top of it. We told her about #1 so she was expecting the bilirubin spike and put her on the lights pretty quickly. Our third baby hospital stay was the shortest, bilirubin was a little high but just slightly above normal, no lights were prescribed, and we went home with our baby boy and a bilirubin in the 11s. We saw the doctor the next day. He had gained weight but was quite yellow. The doc thought he looked great other than the yellow and wanted us to get a heel prick just to be safe. It was 17.5. Shot up even though he was eating and pooping. (Not normal!) We went for a check the next day and it was 19.3. I knew 20 was the back in the hospital number. (25 is a scary number.) we did not want to chance it going any higher. So, on New Year's Eve, off to the children's hospital we went for a 24 hour stay on the lights. After my tears dried I was able to enjoy it. One more day of rest just tending to my new babe and the food was actually really good. The nurse waking me to exclaim happy new year was a bummer. (She thought I was awake thanks to the room's blue glow.)
He was quite happy in the blue sun...except for that part when they tried to draw blood...
Oh my. They couldn't get it and about sent me over the edge. They quickly decided this was unnecessary.
Thankfully, he responded well to the lights and we went home!!
